Finally at long last, she was his
Every evening, the Urchin King made the daily rounds of his kingdom. And every round was the same as the last… until it wasn’t.
A human woman had started to appear on the isolated shore. This was highly unusual and concerning, there hasn’t been a human this close to his territory in a very long time. At first, the Urchin King was on high alert, the humans he had encountered in the past always brought trouble along with them. But something about this human drew him in and once he realized she was no threat to him or his kingdom, he could not keep himself away. Dipping her toes In the water while humming absent mindedly, she basked in the fading light of the sun. The Urchin King started to look forward to his evening rounds, he found this human intriguing and dare he even say it, beautiful. Her eyes were nothing like he’d seen before. Unlike his kind, whose eyes were as dark and deep as the abyss they dwelled in, hers were bright and full of emotion. Occasionally they would well up, the droplets falling into the very sea he was hiding in. He could taste her and oh how he wished to comfort her, to touch her even.
Eventually the woman felt the eyes watching her every move, but she didn’t feel uneasy like she knew she should. Something about it made her curious and the presence drew her in. The Urchin King would get his wish this particular evening, because the woman would see him. Eyes meeting, It was like the wave inside him crested and crashed all in one breath. She could feel it too, drawn in by the invisible strings that connected their hearts as one.
They met up at the shore day after day, sitting and chatting until the woman would eventually fall asleep nestled in his arms. But even though he was a king, even though he considered himself a gentleman, the pull of their bond was too much for him to bear… for both of them to bear. And before they knew it, they couldn’t live without one another.
